I know what you mean. I usually don't mind that it gets dark early - a good excuse to throw on PJs right after work and settle in after dinner w/my nook, BYC and Facebook but it wipes out ALL motivation to do anything else! When I checked on the chickens yesterday afternoon, their water was (partially) frozen (surprise surprise). DH isn't going to get to running electricity out there so I'm going to Tractor Supply this weekend for extra waterers to switch out every day. UGH! Have you heard anything about a big storm for next Wednesday?

People at work were talking about the storm. We will see. I don't have electricity in the coop, so I ran a really long extention cord for the bird bath heater.

I gotta do SOMETHING very soon. I wish the coops were closer to the house. I'm going to need an extension cord for the extension cord !

This went out the let the chickens out and their water was frozen. Have their heater lamp on, thinking that would keep it from freezing!

I read using a heat lamp will eventually make them become intolerant of the cold weather. Think it's true or is it ok to use a heat lamp periodically if the weather is extreme?

Sorry I have been MIA for the past couple of days! Been very busy busy!!!
I spent all morning breaking ice and refilling waterers for the chickens and ducks...not fun...its the only thing I hate about winter! I guess its good exercise lugging around a 5 gallon bucket back and forth a billion times lol
As for a heat lamp...iv never used one..I dont want my chickens getting use to having extra heat in the winter. I do have a heated water bowl I tried to use last year, but it didnt work that well..water still froze :(

I was going to get heated bowl and turn it upside down and put their water feed top of that. I am only using a heating lamp at night because my neighbor told me too. That is what he does, I'm not sure what to do in the winter for my chickens this is our first winter with them.

In all honesty its just a matter of what makes you feel better...the chickens do just fine without the extra heat. I just cant bring myself to put a heat lamp in their coop...I would be terrified of a fire or somthing bad happening.
Iv had chickens for about 5 years now, they dont have an insulated coop or anything special. I just throw tons of hay and dry leaves in there and keep piling on the hay all winter.
