Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

I feel the same way. I lose a few to raptors every year and lost half my flock to a pair of hunting foxes a few years ago. It was tragic, but that is life with chickens so I keep a flock large enough hoping that I don't get wiped out. If you want eggs or chicks, let me know. I am happy to provide you with chicks. They will be mixes, but should lay a colorful basket and be hardy hybrids.

Yea, I keep telling myself that they're "only chickens" but that's not how I really feel. I had a few favorites and that's what bothers me the most. I am going to get some of those cuties of LSzajko's tomorrow and I have 48 in the incubator. I was also contemplating getting some of Coupe's lavender orpingtons and 2 Jersey Giants, although I'm having second thoughts about them. I have to see how this plays out over the next few days. What are yours mixes of? Just to get an idea..

I have a cream crested legbar and a dark brahma over my laying flock. I have been hatching only the eggs from my legbar hens, so I know they will carry the blue egg gene (or in my hens cases, green egg). So, good chance at getting pure CCLs. I think if the brahma was covering them they would have feathered legs, but I am still working out the genetics for that.

Hmm.. I may be interested in a couple girls. Where are you located and how much do you want per chick?

Serenity....I'm so sorry you lost your flock. I can't imagine. I'm just starting out with this. I have 6 chicks (3wks old) in a brooder (dog crate). My husband keeps waring me not to get too attached for that very reason. How can I not get attached? They're on my dining room table! I feed them and talk to them. I'm sure you will have fun with new babies though. Where in the hudson valley are you? I'm in rock tavern (new Windsor area) and I've seen the fox walk through my yard. My neighbor has chickens too though so we will see how this goes when they're ready to go outside.

Thanks. I'm in Plattekill. My coop is very strong.. fox proof, IF the door is shut/locked at dusk. Next time around is going to be different. I can't allow the chickens to free range if I'm not going to be home to lock them in. I feel bad keeping them locked up 4 days a week but it'll be for their own good. Or maybe I'll start feeding in the afternoon so I can train them to go in early. It was a hard lesson learned.

New chicks!! Thanks Lisa!
