Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

But of COURSE it started to storm as I was in the middle of cleaning out the coop

I hope the Dingbats had enough sense to head back home. When I opened the run to let them out they scattered and like the good chicken momma I am, when I heard that first (loud) clap of thunder I ran in the house.

Thank you. I'll try both Tractor Supply and craigslist. Thanks again.
You're welcome and good luck!

Sometimes Tractor Supply has those swap meets in their parking lots but I would be cautious since you don't know how healthy they are or how clean the chickens' environment was. Also, the Dutchess County Fair is coming up and I believe some of those chickens are for sale...again, the health of those chickens may be 'iffy' also.

Hi Everyone! I'm from just outside of Middletown and I just ordered my first set of 5 chickens today! I have done some research, but I have no idea what I'm doing so when I came across this thread I thought it would be nice to join. Does anyone have any advice on coops? I need an inexpensive starter. I'm worried about quality- everything I find online that is pre-made gets bad reviews! what should I do/ where should I buy? Thanks!

Hi! I am very new to this also, but I'll share my experience. I bought mine from Hayneedle (http://www.hayneedle.com/product/chickencoopdeluxe.cfm), and although the quality seems pretty good, two dogs were able to push through the screened portion (lower left in the photo). They killed one of my chickens, but the other four are okay. I still like the coop, but I think if the screening were attached on the outside, they might not have been able to get in. The company sells others, so your may find something else.

Good luck and post a photo when you get your coop and your chickens!

Thank you Laura760, I will check out that site next. I do already expect that I will have to make some of my own modifications on almost any coop I purchase, so I will keep your experience in mind and will definitely let you know which coop I decide on. Thank you again for the warm welcome! I am excited to be a part of this great group!
