I have a single chick that hatched 4 days ago. She has been inside with me from day one as I managed to catch my first ever hatch. The chick was attacked by the Mama hen the second she cleared the egg, so of course I snatched her up did some research here and she's been good with her scalped wound healing. This evening however I noticed this knot looking thing on her shoulder. It was not there this afternoon. Any ideas? The injury on her head I put Betadine on once or twice and since I've been putting triple antibiotic ointment at least twice a day. Could this be a reaction? Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

Might it be her crop? I freaked out when I had a little baby chick with a "lump" on her right shoulder. I posted a pic and people on here said it was most likely the crop. They were right. It was just full of food.

Does it look grainy inside there? Check it in the morning and see if the lump has gone away.

Here's my thread so you can compare the pictures and see what people said.

Looks like the same thing! And it has gone down and Mimi is perfectly happy as long as she is with me. I have to pull the last two eggs from the broody today if they haven't hatched, I so hope this sweet baby has a friend. Thank you so much!

You’re welcome. Glad it wasn’t anything bad.

The things we get to look back on and laugh about, huh? ;)

Sorry, I just saw this. I'll post one I just took and one right after I got her away from the hen. I think it looks way better, but I'm getting mixed advice on how long to put triple antibiotics on it. She's 5 days now if I remember correctly. Also none of the other eggs hatched, I need to find her a buddy or two her age or younger don't I - before she goes to the coop. The other half is already teasing about having a house chicken and the dog is not a happy camper at all! Lol

Ok, I took a couple more bcuz it really looks worse and wet in the photos. It's bad, but those pics are horrible. She's been in the house five days now. I named her Screaming Mimi since she's got the loudest and very best healthy lungs I've ever heard from a chic. Due to the fact that she's bossy and screams to get what she wants and is sleeping in my hair she's won! The other half thou? Says I've ruined another farm animal! I don't know what he was expecting especially since he's met me before but lmao

I agree, letting it dry out and get nasty made no sense and that's why I asked here! I know I'm still a newbie with loads to learn about chickens. This little chic thou? She's a special one! I'm trying to find her a friend her age or younger (she's a week old) so my question is now becomes this - let's say tomorrow I find someone with great references or certifiactions do I still need to keep separated for a month? I know she can't go into my mixed flock alone, down the road when she's bigger and healed but can I safely give/get her a friend now? Is it even possible? And many thanks to all of you each and every time I come here freaking out and you help me help the girls
