HUGE first egg!! But whose??

Have a "gander" (haha) at this egg, laid by one of my pullets yesterday. Bottom right is the egg in question. Based on the heavy bloom (faded in the fridge) and the fact that I could account for my regular layers, I'm sure this is someone's first egg! To its left is a firstie (also anonymous) that is typical for this year's baby girls. Top line is my regulars, (from left) Black Copper Marans, Jersey Giant, and Rhode Island Red. The "suspect" pullets are Brahmas and Cochins. No real way to prove who laid this beauty. First eggs are so much fun!

while new layers can have issues the first month while they work the kinks out, that would most likely be a double yolker for a first time layer, unless it's like what one of mine did was an egg inside of an egg. but all I can say is ouch if it was a first egg for that hen

I got one of those gigantic eggs yesterday. I'm assuming it will be another double yolker... but I can't crack it open until this weekend. My grandkids are insistent that they have to be here to watch.

LOL! She is definitely widening. It was a double-yolk all right (yum!), and I'm 90% sure it was laid by my buff Cochin, Sunshine. She has been showing serious intent for about 2 weeks now, and has quickly become a favorite of my Jersey roo, Hero. I haven't caught her actually laying yet, but if she's got enough funny business going on inside to lay a double, she may need time to sort it out. That was a fantastic 1 egg breakfast! (Definitely not dieting!)

What beautiful eggs!! I only have 2 laying pullets, but was curious if double yolk eggs are normal?! My Golden Comet almost always lays very large double yolk eggs...does it mean anything?

I wouldn't say double yolks were normal, per se, they are a hiccup in the laying works. I guess it's like a heavy period. I'm no expert, in fact this was my first one, but I'm not really concerned about it. Sunshine is a pullet who just started laying, and just needs to figure it out. About your Comet, maybe she is just prone to laying doubles, like some women who are genetically predisposed to having twins. I would keep an eye on her, looking for any signs of stress, but I doubt you have anything to worry about.
