Our chickens have been disappearing left and right. More roos than hens, over a period of about a month. The flock is and always has been a free range flock and I do realize that we take our chances. We have had chickens for about 6 years and have never had a fox problem, at least, not that I know of. The chickens have just been disappearing, although many feathers from our alpha rooster were found a short ways out into the pasture behind our yard.A week ago, my DS saw a fox in the field about 100 yards out. DH took a shot and thinks he hit it, but it ran off. We are on about 40 acres of land. Today, My DH and DS ventured out into the field because they saw some burrows with the binoculars. Sure enough, they found at least a half a dozen burrows within 200 yards of our house and yard. I'm sure there are more. By the sightings and the tracks, we are very certain we have a big problem. My DH and DS "marked their territory" around some of the burrows. It might help, but for sure wont solve the problem. We recently finished building a new coop but dont have a covered yard on it as of yet. The coop, however, is very, very secure at night. I am sure by now, the foxes know they have found their meals, and they wont be going anywhere. What can we do to get rid of this infestation of foxes? Any suggestions, no matter how strange, are appreciated! Thanks to all!

the burrows being out in the field suggests groundhogs, late afternoon watch the burrows and if they are groundhogs they will be coming out,,foxes will be moving right before dark, sitting with a rifle in hand watching the burrows is the best way I have found to rid myself of foxes.good luck

Thanks for your reply mxpres. We have seen the foxes, but never saw any groundhogs. And the tracks are definitely fox. Thanks for your info-I will pass it on to my DH!

I agree. Stay armed, and stay vigilant.

Foxes are a real problem. My chickens are currently confined, because we have lost so many this summer.

It would be very hard on them to be confined during the day, as I said we dont have their new yard constructed yet. The coop is pretty dark and well-insulated for winter, so I cannot see confining them in it 24/7. I think it would get too warm. So we are concentrating our efforts of ridding the foxes that we have.....

You could price an electric netting setup from Premier One fencing. They are specifically designed to keep poultry in, and predators out. They are very effective as long as you keep the fence hot all the time, and in our experience, the fences are very durable.

I've found that it's ever so much easier to construct a safe area for the chickens to live in than it is to try to destroy all your neighboring predators, which are constantly reproducing, and constantly hungry.
