Our youngest gen of 28 weeks has cockerel damage on her back- a huge deep laceration of about 2 inches long and a half inch wide. It's sore and bleeding. We've taken our cockerel away from the girls and sprayed antiseptic on her wound . I've also ordered poultry saddles. What else can we do or give her to help her to heal?

You might apply an antibiotic ointment and make sure that flies do not lay eggs in the wound. Hens generally heal very well from such injuries. Trimming the rooster's toenails and spurs may help, but some roosters are just too clumsy and rough. That sort makes great soup.

Separate her from the other chickens until wound is healed, the other chickens are going to peck at her, sometimes with dangerous consequences. Keep an eye out for infection. Make sure she is eating and drinking. Yes, poultry saddles will help,do you have only a few hens? If so ,then watch out for roosters wearing them out.

We only have 3 hens so far but have 3 chicks just hatched and 7 eggs in the incubator. He's usually a gentle cockerel and treads really well. I'm wondering if it's just his claws that need trimming or he just caught her wrong. Poor baby girl :-(
