So this is Hugo, a Cairn Terrier:

And this is the Black Bantam ORP:

So yesterday, I decided to move my brooder to my garage as the feed and the wood shavings were covering my basement in a thick layer of dust.

I was using the spare plastic containers as brooders and never thought to put a cover over it as I haven't had any problems with the chicks so far. So fast forward this morning, I woke up to my son's alarm and proceeded to check on the chicks. All chicks accounted for. After seeing my son get fed, I went back to bed and didn't wake up until it was time for work. I decided to check on my chicks in the garage again, and found one black bantam missing! I looked everywhere, inside and outside the garage, hoping to at least find a remain if not a live chick. Spent a good hour or so but without any luck. So I called my wife and asked if she saw anything when she drove off this morning but she didn't observe anything.

Depressed, thinking something may have gotten to my chick, I took my son to day care and proceeded to work.
After work this eveing, I came home and decided to use some extra wooden grills that I had made from building my sons' crib, to make a cover for the brooder just in case that something decided to come again.

I was banging along in the garage, when my wife let Hugo and George (my other dog) into the garage to see what I was doing.
So as I was finishing up the cover, I saw Hugo sniffing around in the garage. He sniffed and scratched at some cans of paint thinner I had in the garage. I got curious and thought, hmmm...maybe he found the snake or something that got to my chick hiding behind the cans. So I decide to check up on whatever is behind the cans, and I found that missing black chick sitting there...without a sound! If it would of made some noise, I would of found him this morning.

Hugo always loved watching the chicks. Everytime I say to him "where's the chicks?" he would get excited and go running down the basement stairs to the room where I kept them.

And now, whenever I ask him the same question, he goes sniffing in the garage right along the wall where the chick was found.

This is what the brooder looks like now:

Complete with a wooden grill cover and all chicks accounted for.
