Humane dispatching tool

My dh comes from South America and there everyone has something that looks like we would call a machete. He had SO much trouble describing to me what he wanted when he came, he finally ended up bringing one back when he visited home.

Its amazing to watch the man with that thing, they use it for everything, from trimming tree branches, chopping weeds (he uses it instead of a weed wacker), dispatching things, etc. He used to sleep with it by his bed, but he scared me too much that way and put so he put it away in the garage, after he figured out here that its probably not needed to scare away intruders! But...if I had to dispatch something, thats what I would use.

My wife will hold the chicken upside down by the feet move the head up to the feet exposing the throat, slices the throat with a very sharp cleaver then bleeds it, the chicken will flap it's wings a little then it over and done. Easy enough and cheap, just got to keep the blade sharp, no need for a cone or tool device, done naturally, we don't remove the head so the axe is out of the question.

If you're really concerned about limiting how much pain the chicken experiences before it dies (as I am), I think the best way to go is whatever application quickly and cleanly removes the head from the body. Sure, the chickens body is going to flap and flop around a bit, but if it's head isn't on it anymore, the chicken isn't feeling any of that.

Since there has been no one who has been decapitated and lived to testify to that (at least no one that I am aware of), the best that we can do is to surmise that once the head is removed the chicken is enjoying a pain free state! But as I said, I know of no one who has survived a decapitation and can/has testified to that fact. We can argue this point and that point until the cows come home. But when they get home, we are still left with complete supposition, and no hard fast evidence.

That said, it is my personal thought that those of who dispatch our own chickens should choose the means that we feel the most comfortable with.... and let that be that!! Oh.... I don't want to see my chickens suffer undue pain either. But, I also realize that there is going to be a certain amount of pain that will accompany the death of a chicken when it is slaughtered.... including some "pain" to the person who has watched that chicken grow from chick to fryer!

JMO!!!
