those who hatch chicks know where this is going. I had one hatch this morning, it had gotten its foot caught in the umbilical cord. and pulled organs out. I normally have left them in incubator to let nature take its course, but I could not let it suffer, this was pretty bad. I feel awful, but I had to do something. what do other people do?

I'm so sorry you have to experience this.

My solution may seem a little gruesome; but I believe in quick endings, with as little time to experience pain as possible. A sharp knife will remove the head before the little one knows what's going on and before it can even get chilled. Recommend you take an old cutting board or scrap piece of wood with you. The longer the chick is out of the incubator, the more time they experience the chill.

Good Luck!!

I commend you on taking action. It's a sad & uncomfortable event - when life is ending in a painful way, and many will just wait it out for one reason or another. It's difficult even though the 'right' thing to do.

Sorry for the experience & loss.

You could use a knife as already said or use poultry shears. I don't let mine suffer either. When there is no hope I end it. No matter how many times you do it, it's always heartbreaking.
