This was such a good/informative thread but has been inactive for a few days, so I figured I'd just stop by & "check in"...
Is Jean still hard at work? I would be really interested in knowing how it all turns out, so at the end of it all can you post or PM me with what happened?
I am on day 18 & losing my little mind with anticipation & worry... DH is laughing at me, says he has watched me take care of rare & endangered animals "with confidence" for years, finds it amusing that am obsessing nonstop about chicken eggs...
Anyway, all 10 of my eggs developing nicely, although I DO see a difference in embryo size, relatively speaking: my silkies & serama seem to be "filling" more of the egg, whereas my "standards" seem to take up less space in theirs (??)... are def alive/active though, so don't know if it is cause for concern or not.
Air cells look pretty good, but again, the silkies & serama look bigger/a bit better. Standard's air cells look a bit smaller (proportionally speaking), but still "not bad".
Guess we'll see sometime Saturday or thereabouts... first hatch, so would be a MIRACLE if they all made it!!
I am beginning to learn one of the frustrations of araucana breeding.
In my first batch of about 20 araucana eggs, all but one were clear. The lone developer stopped mid-way -- probably the lethal tufting gene.
In my second batch of 19 araucana eggs and 9 cochin eggs, 18 of the araucana eggs were clear. Fortunately, 6 of the cochin eggs are cooking right along. I may at least have SOMETHING to show for this second batch!
And just to keep this on topic: I'm trying to keep my incubator humidity at 45-50%, my hatcher humidity at 60-65%, and temps at 100 (both Sportsman and Hovabator hatcher are forced air). If anyone has further suggestions, I'd love to hear em!
