Hummingbirds are back.........

I have one little hummingbird fellow who is SO small, much smaller than the others around here, and if any show up whilst he is at a feeder, he will chase them all away. Then he goes to one of the trees and perches, twittering his fight call.

Some of them fly through the spray on my pond fountain. Many perch and drink from the pond waterfalls. One used to dive-bomb one of my cats, terrified her. Cracked me up.

They're fearless. They know they can do whatever they want and no one can touch 'em. And they look SO cool.

It's fun getting buzzed by them.

For some reason it amazes me how much them little birds talk.

I remember rescueing one out of a creek years and years ago. The farmer (RIP his soul) and my father reached down the creek bank with a long net and barely got the little thing. Sat there for hours drying and feeding the poor thing. SO SMALL! Finally after house he/she seemed fine and we put her/him on a feeder and then flew up to a wire were one of it's parents came down and perched next to it. The coolest thing though I went back the next day and (I believe the one that we saved) was buzzing all around me a twittering. Made me so happy I cried.

Feeder has been out for a wk. I know I'm early for here but it is close. I enjoy the dog fights they have over the feeder. They are stingy little buggers.

Ours are back too! I love to watch them.

Years ago, I worked out at an airplane repair facility. One day I was cutting through the hangar where the private owners kept the little Cessnas & Pipers, & as I was walking between the rows of planes, I saw a sudden flash of red on the ground underneath one of them.

I walked over to see what it was & it was a baby hummingbird, its' feet and wings were all tangled up in spider webs - there were huge spider webs up in the eaves & corners of the tall hangar. The flash of red had been its' ruby throat caught in the sunlight, just for that one second I happened to be looking that direction. Think that was meant to be? I do!

It took me almost 10 minutes to untangle it from the spider webs, then I took it out front & let it go.
