My aunt has a chicken who has a humpback. It feels like bone. We are wondering what it could be? I will post pics soon. Has anyone else had this problem?

I'ts called Roach Back, A deformity of the spine , Same as Wry Tail except the upper back is affected and is usually genetic

Is there any way to fix it? Is it painful for the chicken?

Sometimes it can be muscle as well however, though only usually occurs in game breeds for this situation from what I've seen. I've never seen it do any harm to a bird myself.

God bless,
Daniel.

Thank you so much, we were worried about him! Glad he'll be okay!

We also have a rooster with the same condition. It is not painful for the chicken..it's a genetic or developmental bone condition like scoliosis in human beings. It does not cause them any pain, but realize the condition will never go away. They just look a bit odd!

Glad I found this thread, I hatched this chicken last year and she is so strange looking.. Now I know..

I know the original thread is old, but wanted to add in my photo as well of a possible roach back hen.... any clues if this is roached or something else?
