Hurricane Florence and a broody duck

I hope your family and your ducks make it safely through the storm. IF the eggs don’t make it your ducks can always make more. Mother Nature can be cruel but she can also be amazing.
If you could get the nest in a dog crate with mom inside I think that would be good may God Bless you all.
That was my first thought too! - Forget the eggs, think about your and your families safety first! Florence has turned into a monster some hours ago. It is expected to stall out somewhere over the east-coast and will rain itself to death. Trust me, i have experienced first hand what that means, i lived in Houston (TX) last year when Harvey did the very same thing. Hope you don't live in a flood prone area or at the coast. If there is an evacuation order, follow it. Property, ducks and hatching eggs can be replaced, you and your family not.

Thank you for the help, this is what I'm going to do today. Now I can worry a little less!

Where are you in regards to florence? she is up to category 4 today and now it is a state of emergency? They are worried could go to category 5. If near this follow instructions for possible evacuation if ordered out. This storm is hitting coast Thursday in Carolina/ Virginia. I’m glad the duck house is up. Divider quick and easy hope it works. Hope you are not in flood areas from storm expecting at least a foot of water if not more. Prayers!

I would try to get her in a dog crate, can you put them in a garage, worst case scenario? We went thru Irma in S. FL last year, had to bring in the chickens to the garage as the storm approached. Not fun. We didn't think the winds would get as strong as they did, based on the forecast. Our coop withstood the winds, but it was literally raining sideways for hours on end. So they had to be brought inside. (My roo was literally shielding the hens from the blowing rain when we went out to get them, he was soaked to the skin, they were pretty dry. ) Don't underestimate this storm, I've been thru several bad ones, including Andrew - the power they can pack is amazing. Keep everyone safe, best wishes.

Thank you. I'm definitely preparing for the worst but hoping for the best. I've done what I can for the animals, I just pray that they'll be okay. We're almost ready for when it comes our way. Just need a few more things. I'm in virginia, so I'm hoping we aren't hit too hard. Florence is a beast right now. I saw the picture of it from space and it looks scary.

I'm in VA so I hope it dies down some before it comes my way! Not looking forward to the 12-18 inches of water!!

Just so you know the news report here is it is unlikely to die down before landfall. Hope it does. Be prepared to move them into a garage high up 24 inches for storm or possible evacuation if they at all encourage this for your area. Have plenty of food and water on hand in containers. They are not predicting it slowing down any time soon but expect after it hits things in its path that may slow it down some. Hope they are wrong! Prayers!

I do Disaster Assistance for homeowners through HFH and PDA to help homeowners reconstruct and return to areas after disasters and they are leveled to the ground and if not the damage is so severe we often have to demo the house down first to determine if anything can be saved due to flooding and mold. Be careful of high winds as others have reported!

My church gears up for watchful waiting at times like this to see how it works out in the end or if we have another area to try and serve by collections for funding or take a crew down to help. I remember Katrina and Sandy. The devastation at this category and less was for miles in and down the coast. Three years later still rebuilding. It often takes 5-10 years for the towns to almost completely recover and some never do to its fullest capacity as was before. Hard to get people to return. One of my Sandy recovery families who only had basically the central part of the house left and damaged nearly to the roof from flooding has since moved after reconstruction. It took my church three times to go back to even finish the house to be livable. She was out of her home for 18 months living with relatives. We are glad she evacuated with her kids.

Her husband stayed and had a harrowing experience where all his evacuation plans were destroyed by flooding and sat in the top of his house waiting to drown in the cold and dark with no power. His only solace that he got his family out. He prayed to see his family again as he huddled waiting and praying for the water to go down and not take him with it. He could not sleep and by morning the water thankfully started to go down. He was literally on top of the highest point in the house surrounded by water praying for his life wishing he had left with his family. He had saved up food/water/generators/pair of jet skis in garage for escape and the water came in too fast. The garage door was damaged and ripped away, could not get to jet skis that floated to the ceiling and were damaged then ripped away. Bad idea to think a boat is your escape. If you have to think this. Its time to evacuate. Lucky he is alive and well today but others not so lucky. Best laid plans can go awry. It was days to weeks after the storm hit before he could see his family again. It took that long for the flooding to go down to get to functional levels in the area. He was never so glad to see his family in all his life when finally they came to check on him to see if he was alive. You can not expect rescue as too many in same situation and emergency crews are at a skeleton level. They frequently have to wait out the most dangerous parts of the storm. Have backup plans and leave early if necessary.

That is terrible. I'm so sorry about your friends but thank god her husband survived!!!
Just gathering up a few last minute items we need, etc. Just about ready for whatever comes our way.
Keep your fingers crossed for me and whoever else is in the path of this. I'm already planning in losing power, the second the wind blows it cuts off. The generator will be a lifesaver.. you know how kids are without power... oh lord...

I am about 100 miles from North Carolina coast. Praying hard it turns but preparing for whatever happens. Please study safe if you are in this storms path. Praying for everyone and their animals to remain safe.
