Hurricane force winds - coop destroyed - update on page 2

I feel for you and I'm glad the birds are all ok. They take a lickin' and keep on layin! I was offered several positions in the Kodiak schools, I'm still considering it, now I know you have winds like we do and worse it would be just like home but without the desert!

when i was in Alaska on my honeymoon..we saw a small tour plane hit a mountain....it was a nightmare!..they were on our cruise ship...and the father/husband (it was a daughter and a mother on the plane) stayed behind in the port while they tried to find any remains of his family...they said it was winds that caused the crash..... and i honestly hate to say it..but..i'm glad i picked the whale watch tour that day...we were thinking about a plane tour..but it was more money...

Well, there's a chance we might make that run in the Spring... probably not in time for the cocoa and soup, but if I can convince hubby to take the boat down there, can we look you up?

He says it's only a couple of hours by boat!

Writer - that's cool that you were offered positions at the schools. If you know which ones I can give you some inside "dirt". The schools in Alaska are really good, actually. What do you teach?

Tori - you guys are always welcome to look us up! I have no idea how long the trip is by small boat. I know the ferry from Homer takes 9 hours, but that's the ferry. I've only done it once and it was on rough seas, so not ready to repeat that experience! Just PM me whenever you think you're headed this way and I'll let you know how to look us up.

Redhen, that would have been a horrific experience. Unfortunately, plane crashes, boats sinking and deaths from just about anything Mother Nature can dish out are part of life in Alaska. It affects the whole state when it happens.

Debi, I hear you about the wind. I was living in Wyoming when I met DH - basically in the high desert. I hated the wind there. I hardly notice it here except on these bad days.

Scary storms.

I had some patients that lived in Unalakleet... came down here for teeth work every six months... school teachers... but nothing in Alaska is close.

How bout a lean-to against the wall of your house... would be a temporary solution but should withstand the wind (if attached securely to the bldg wall)

Well atleast you didnt have damaged like I got from Hurricane Ike that went thru here back in Sept.. I feel your pain..glad your birds are doing okay. I didn't lose any to Ike.

Kodiak,
I am now totally feeling your pain- my coop blew over this am- as soon as DD is up will take pic and post. Don't know why it went over - winds gusting to 75 mhp per the weather channel here near Buffalo ny- not the 100mph you had. 10 Birds in garage, pooping all over DH stuff.

. I think I am learning a big lesson about wintering chickens- as in not to.
