Hurricane Matthew

Hi all! We live on the Southeastern coast of NC. We're starting to get a bit uneasy about a head-on land fall possibility here. We are still new to chickens, its been less than a year. How in the world are we supposed to prepare our 6 girls for a potentually catastrophic hurricane? Evacuation with my hens isn't an option. What can I do to give them the best chances of survival?

I know it's hard on you
I have never experienced a hurricane because there is none where I live
But maybe you could take them into your basement if you have one?

Thanks Fionn, unfortunately where we are on the coast we arent zoned to have basements. Our water table is pretty shallow. That would be an ideal option otherwise.

Sorry, no, inlander here....unless you count Lake Michigan which can bring some wicked storms...and tornados are not unknown here had one very close this summer.

Our run is pretty much plastic green netting, open top. The coop is in the run. The coop is very well made and heavy. We put a slant roof on it. We flood out and the girls are stuck in the coop when we get just a little rain storm.

@michelle78 I really don't know. I'm in Western NC, so mountains/foothills here. With your mentioning that the run floods with just a rain storm, you may want to consider caging/kenneling them in your house. Spare bedroom/laundry room.

Also call your local humane society and ask if they have any suggestions.

Let's hope it doesn't hit. Keep us posted when you can.
