I just got these chicks in the mail today, and this one looks hurt. There is a bald spot and what looks like a lot of swelling on one side. I didn't notice it until just now, so I'm pretty sure it must have happened during shipping but I can't be sure. I have a radiant heat brooder, so I'm worried maybe it's a burn...is it too low? It's at an angle. See pics.

Edit to add that the chick is acting just like the rest of them. Eating and drinking normally.

Welcome To BYC

Cute chicks!

It looks like the chick has a full crop, sometimes when the crop is full you can see a bulge through the fluff like that.

If she's eating/drinking/active and pooping, then I wouldn't worry too much.

How many chicks do you have?

I'd consider raising the lowest part a notch or two higher. Are the chicks inside your home where the temperature is relatively warm?

Thank you so much! She still looks like that this morning, but I didn't see her before she started eating. Her crop doesn't feel hard.

I have five chicks, and they are inside.

The crop should fill up when she's eating, you should be able to feel it on her and the other chicks. Then it will slowly empty as they process/digest the food.

If she's not standing around or isolating herself with her eyes closed looking miserable, then she's probably fine.

With chicks being inside, then I'd raise that low side of the plate just a little.
If they are too cold, they will let you know, they'll be peeping a lot and huddling.
