I have a few hens that were hurt by 2 of my roosters and they have no feathers on their heads or back. I was wondering what I can put on them until their feathers grow back. Their skin is really red and exposed. They look so sore, but seem like they are not in any pain. Their is no signs of infection and no blood sores. I worry about them being in the sun. Will their feathers grow back eventually? I also was wondering if it is ok to put diomatious earth in their bedding for mites. It is the organic food grade kind. It says on the back of the package that it is harmful to humans and domestic pets so I don't want to use it on my chickens if it is harmful to them. I would appreciate any and all feedback. Thank you.

I have same problem but don't know who is doing it. I have 8 hens and 2 roosters. 1 barred rock is fine and so are both roosters. Other 7 hens missing a lot on there backs. Never observed them being picked on. They free range during day. Gota be happening in the coop.

I used these when my rooster was favoring (mounting... getting busy with... etc!) one particular hen to the point of baldness - http://www.hensaver.com/hen-saver-hen-apron-saddle.html

It worked well, and it was hysterically funny watching the poor hen get used to the saddle. Ever seen a chicken walking backwards? :)

Feathers will grow back eventually, but there is no predicting when. I sprinkle food grade DE on bedding from time to time. I think the warnings on the package are in regards to breathing the dust.
