Hi all! I have a week old rouen and pekin. Last night, our pekin, who is growing much quicker than our rouen, stepped on the rouen. She didn't seem too agitated last night but this morning, she won't walk and if she does, it is only for a few steps and she limps pretty bad. What should we do?! I have never had ducks before, only chickens and I have never had this problem before. Help BYC!! :/

When one of my ducks gets injured, especially if it's a limp, I put the duck in a small area with food and water. The less the duck moves around, the better. They still need a bit of exercise, but not much. I do not leave them with other ducks because they can be re-injured or the other ducks may pick on the injured one. It takes about a week of separation and I watch them carefully when I re-introduce the healed one.

There is a large size difference in Pekins and Rouens. If you can separate the two, that would help. When they mature, the size difference is not so much. I was amazed at how fast Pekins grow compared to other ducks.

How is the duckling? (And how come I did see this till now?)

I would let the duckling swim in warm water two or three times a day, check to see if the leg is broken. A vet may be needed.

If it is a pull, those take a while to heal, and keeping the duckling as quiet as possible is good, you can apply an Epsom salt compress (it is a laxative don't let the little eat or drink it) two or three times a day.

A very small dab of Traumeel on the leg and foot at night is something else I would try.

Poultry vitamins once a week, too.

Daisy is almost completely back to being herself again! She never acted differently, but she truly could not walk at all on Saturday. Saturday night we started our girls on niacin in their water. Sunday morning, daisy tried to take a few steps. Every day she has been walking more and more. She is now running and playing normally, but when she gets super tired, she has a very small limp. The girls swim in a small tub twice a day and they love it. Daisy is truly better!! Thank you all BYC! :)

Relief!
