Husband bought the "wrong" baby chicks... Suggestions?

I would go ahead and get more and then sell the ones you don't want either now or once they start laying and you see how well they lay.

I'd like to hear more about this chicken 'soap'. LOL! Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Seriously, we just sold 15 chicks that were 5 weeks old on Craigslist. That gave us plenty of time to pick out the ones that we wanted to keep. Piece of cake!

Thank you all!

I think I'm going to go ahead and get 6 more chicks

... I called our local TSC and they are supposed to be getting 400 more assorted pullets in this week sometime so I'm going to go look and see if there seem to be any barred rocks among them.

The coop we're building will comfortably house 9 -12 chickens. Eighteen would be a squeeze, but it would be bearable while they're still little, and I'll post on Craigslist to sell some and what I'm not able to sell I'll see if I can give to the kids' 4-H leader who raises chickens.

Thanks again!

It might not have been his fault. My TSC is only carrying one type of chicks now and ducks. It might have been all he could get. At the start they had straight run mixed and assorted pullets of 2 kinds and bantams plus ducks. Now it is pullets of one kind and ducks.

I wouldn't eat them, getting that many eggs would be nice. I suggest craigslist like they said if you really can not possibly find room for them.

There's usually a market for started chicks and young pullets. Many people can not or do not want to deal with tiny chicks. Some have too many predators around, others want to know for sure they're not getting an unwanted roo. Perhaps you can turn this to your advantage, let the sales of your extra chicks pay for the cost to feed all the ones you are keeping.

I don't think you'll have any problem posting them on Craigslist at any age. I have purchased 18-month old laying hens (which I was very happy with) and recently 4 week old hens that I adore.

I preferred getting them a little bit older because of experience (mine, not there's

). All the kinks were worked out and they are very healthy birds. It also gave me a chance to see how they were being raised, conditions, etc.

Good luck.

Go buy more chicks. I expect to have a very colorful flock. I have 18 chicks that are 11 different breeds. I had planned on 12 - 14 but a free chick day at one of the local feed stores bumped the number up to 18. Hopefully none will turn out to be roosters. None of them are showing any signs yet of rooster. Fingers crossed... I actually can have roosters where I live but I want to be a good neighbor. I don't think my family would tolorate a rooster either.
