It's not that guineas aren't bright...they just think on a completely different level than any other creature on this planet.
If you read my post in this section about my guineas being "tattle-tales" you'll see where someone likened them to an Autistic person. I have a DD with Asperger's, and this makes perfect sense to me. They are intelligent, but you can't base their intelligence on any other animal.
Mine knew the geese weren't supposed to be in the backyard and sounded the alarm. They like the geese. They free-range with the geese, but the geese were breaking the rules. Period. They kept it up until I removed the geese from the backyard. The guineas and chickens are allowed in the backyard. Would the chickens have told on the geese? No way. Whether it is a matter of them not caring, or not knowing, there's no way to know. The guineas noticed and cared. That's the difference.
If you do a search on "deflating subcutaneous emphysema" then it will take you to my post about it. It's funny you mentioned her looking like a pillow, because that is what I ended up naming the goose that survived it. She was really bad. Hers was from a dog attack that she survived. Then, the next day we noticed the swelling. It was bad, and every time I thought we had it licked, it would come back worse than ever. When I was about to give up, I decided I had nothing to lose, and got really aggressive with it. I refused to do anything with her head/neck/chest area. She started having a little trouble breathing, but I found if I did deep tissue massage, almost like you would with lymphedema patients, I could move the subcutaneous air around. I guess it was kind of like "milking" it down to the areas where I could remove it. You could actually hear the air hissing out like a deflated air mattress or something.
Anyway, sorry for getting off-topic there!
I just hadn't heard of anyone else on here having the problem.
You will love your guineas!
