Huskys and chickens

Hello everyone I just wanted to chime in. I personally have not had a husky but I had a Akita/German Shepherd. He looked like a Akita but with German Shepherd coloring anyway he showed up and was already 3 years old and he was the best with my chickens. He was actually protective of them. We did not keep him because we found his owner but I would have in a heart beat. Now we have a Grey Hound/Whippet, 26 pound Bichon Frise/Poodle mix, and a Bichon Frise/Poodle puppy. They all are great with the chickens and are in the same fenced in area as the chicks non of my dogs where ever raised with chickens but they all love them. Honestly I do not think it is impossible it will just take a good amount of training I do know people with Husky's and chickens around here.

We may be Navy, but we're gonna be here for 5 years. So we will definitely be quite secure. And I've never known a husky raised around kids that was aggressive to them...not that it can't happen. But I know a ton of australian shepherds that are aggressive towards everythung. I think its more how they're raised. We have a very active household with a VERY active boxer, so I think a husky would have quite a bit of exercise. I've researched showing and have been talking to breeders for a very long time. And dog sledders too. Now I'm comfortable with every aspect of owning a husky, EXCEPT the chicken part. And most of you confirm what I fear, but some of you give me hope. I can only try...

I've had a husky in the past but not at the same time as chickens. I totally understand why you would want one. They are beautiful dogs. He got along great with cats and kids, even babies. I would not trust him with birds however. Make sure the gates are always locked and the fence is realy high. Mine could jump a 6 foot fence no problem. He was our best friend until someone would leave the door open and then he was gone. Spent days looking for him on several occasions. Always got him back. Lived to be 14 and 1/2. Is now burried in the back yard under a statue of St. Francis.

I vote no.
It finally happened. The dog in the above photo came over with one of his buddies when I left the coop door open for 5 minutes.
The chickens didn't come outside because of the snow. They had already killed 10 when I stopped them.

Oh God ChickenCanoe. I am so sorry. How devastating. My neighbor has one too, and it came up to the barn and ate one of my 18wk old pullets that had flown over the fence. They keep letting it out, or it gets out. I don't know which, but I popped it yesterday with a pellet gun when it was in my yard and headin to the barn. The next time it won't be the pellet gun....

Oh my. That's awful. I can't imagine how tragic and messy that would be. Well i'll let fate decide. If my eggs hatch, then chickens it is! If not, then husky. I just hope if it is chickens, the red fox thats hanging by my house moves on!!!

You seriously have to consider, although they are your dream dog (why, oh why?!), why you want one now and if it is a good idea at this point in your life.
You might be staying in one place for 5 years but what happens after that? There are no guarantees with the Navy! So in 5 years, everyone get shipped to Okinawa or wherever and then what happens to the dog? Huskies are very pack-oriented, you can't just give him to a relative to hold for you - they are high maintenance and IMO prone to separation anxiety and boredom induced destruction. The Husky Rescue groups are full of 'dream dogs'.
I hate to pop your bubble...
