Hello everyone,

Could anyone give me details about the Hy-line brown chicken please. I mean, its life span and how many years it will be laying eggs. About how old it starts to lay eggs. And most important, is it dual purpose, can we eat those chickens, after its laying cycle is over? Thank you.

Never had that particular strain, but as for most laying breeds, it'll probably live to 4-6 years on average for a life, but can live into their 20's. They will probably start laying at 20-24 weeks, but can take as long as 8 months. Their max egg laying will be between 6 months and 18 months, but can lay for 4 or 5 or 10 years depending on the bird. And you can eat any bird, just no bird will have the meat you find on commercial broilers, so just expect stew. Any info you find on "dual purpose layers" would generally apply to this strain.

I bought some hens after their first molt. They've been a bid disappointment. They never did lay very well. Now, at about 2 1/2 years of age, they're starting to die off. Compared to my Barred Rocks, Buffs, and Rhode Island Reds, they are not good at all. I really regret buying them.

After their first molt, most birds have lowered production
That's why factory farms cull their birds and replace them with new ones before they molt
