Mixing heritage breed roosters with Hy-Line hens

Hey @ChookaPete how’s your chickens doing?

So a hen goes broody yester-yesterday. I didn't suspect anything as my hen sounds broody and peck very often when laying, but she goes in to sit already deep in the evening, so that was suspicious...well anyway she sat there for 12 hours without eggs and followed when I took the eggs laid the next day so I gave her a small nest and put her in a small cage(100 cmx200cm)

We’ll see if she’ll hatch anything but I would like hen-raise cockerels. I’ve learned from my mistake, I am not touching broody’s eggs anymore and separating her from day 1. I am also not intending to candle the eggs anymore, unless it was left outside the nest of the broody.

It’s not the same hen but same breed, same batch. Interesting right?

I am thinking of naming her something like “Auburn” “Autumn” or “Aurum”. And also gotta “ring” her. The ex-broody Butter gets to enjoy her break now that someone else is broody. It have only been 25 days since Butter brood unsuccessfully so I don't expect Butter to go broody again soon anyway.

I thought i’d be interesting to share you. Please tell if you don’t like news of my chickens though.

Aww! Every time, I love the sight of broody hens on their nest! :love

I like the idea for her name too. I don't know which I'd pick, as I like all three (Auburn, Autumn, Aurum). Thanks for sharing this with me!

Yes, Coffee and Cocoa are going well! I don't know if I'll actually properly name them Coffee and Cocoa, but that's who they are for now. Coffee seems more vocal, always cheeping and often sticks fairly close to her mother Clover, while Cocoa is happily independent. However Clover has started laying eggs again and is generally with the rest of the flock, while Coffee and Cocoa happily forage away from her. They all run up towards me for treats!

But both do roost with Clover each night for warmth, and they are now all roosting on the perch with the rest of the flock. I'll post some pictures soon.

Welp. Her name ended up being officially...”Cookie”! Out of the left field ish but I kept mistaking Butter for her because of the same comb shape and fingers(I never noticed that till now) so I decided to name her something starting with “C” instead(so like would be B then C) and Cookie just comes to mind afterward. Yeah A letter name would've worked too but I am weird like that :)

That’s good! Unfortunately, my first time broody Cookie ended up breaking 4 eggs through the weekday. Today I lifted her up to a mess 😔

It's to be expected tbh their fat butt was clumsy but I was so naive in thinking maybe this time more than 8 eggs would work out!(last time Butter break about 4 too. She ended up only with 4 left out of 14 eggs iirc)

I cleaned up what left and gave her back only 6. If these fail then I gave her a chance, she failed so be it.(My mom is so angry I kept allowing the broody eggs lmao she doesn't want broodies at all. The profit from selling eggs outweighs the cost. For info profit from 5 eggs is enough to buy a day-old chick)

Also worryingly Cookie keeps returning to the coop’s nest so I have to cage her in, again. Food and water will be provided tomorrow...it has been 5 days idk why isn’t she recognizing this nest.

Then there's Butter. It had only been 30 days since her failed clutch, she's already broody.

Well I gave her a nest and cage too today's midnight. We'll see if she commits but dayum, a month since last clutch and already broody. I know she didn't lose much weight but dang, didn't got traumatized or something.
Here is a photo from late April when they were still very close to their Mama:
