Hydro Outage coming up...

cell batteries are made for indoor use. no so in car batteries. not even close to the same. inverters are used in campers and RV's, alot. notice where the batteries are? in ventillated closets. car batteries contain acid, which does evaporate. feel free to have them in a home. they surely won't be in my home. here's what the label on one i have sitting in my shed. i went out to read it to get the words right..."There is a risk of explosive gases being released when lead acid batteries are being charged or discharged. Failure to follow instructions may cause property damage, explosive hazard, and/or personal injury."

what about a small genarator, the small honda eu or ei series are very quiet and will run for 8 hours on two gallons of gas

that would be your best option. just run it outside and run an extension cord to the incubator. most have multiple outlets too, so you can run a cord to your refridgerator too. check home depot or lowes, they rent them, or check yellow pages for equipment rental. it's probably cheaper to search craigslist and buy one though.

Aw, don't worry about using a battery with an inverter. The load of the incubator isn't going to be that bad and any outgassing should be minimal.

Unless it's in the very early days of incubation I wouldn't be too worried about a four hour outage. A bottle of warm water placed in the incubator after some time has gone by will probably keep it warm enough....of course it seems that they never get the length of time right on those things. ????

Best wishes,
Ed

Good point about the battery in the house, I could put the incubator out in the garage safely too.

The neighbor did offer his generator, but I feel awfully silly running a generator for 4 hours just for one 60watt bulb lol!
A friend who is well-endowed in the breast region offered to stuff them in her bra

It's "supposed" to be for 4 hours. If it runs longer than that, I would like to have something in place other than just a hot water bottle. But I could keep refilling the hot water bottle (we have a woodstove we could fire up for water).
They'll be on day 14, 12 and 8(quail).

The car would probably die if I plugged it in to the cigarette lighter, so I'd have to run the car for awhile.
Really, I think I might just put them under the broody. She seems to be pretty flexible and doesn't mind being disturbed. Then I know they're okay, regardless of how many hours it lasts.

I am thankful for the advanced notice, much less stressful than running around while the power is out, trying to find a solution.

Oh! As an aside, I have a UPS hooked up to the 'bator in the meantime for short outages, and DH said he'd keep an eye out for a solar backup. Glad I'm not the only one obsessed with these eggs! lol

I had some major temp. fluctuations during the hydro outage, temp dropped very quickly between the hydro going out and hooking up the generator, then it went too high.

Lost 5 eggs

I don't understand "hydro"? You have water-power generated electricity? Or something like that?

Isn't there a way to keep the temperature stable by placing jars of hot/boiling water in the incubator? Water stablizes temps.
