Hydrometer

Careful with the use of device nomenclatures. This thread is a mess with "Hydrometer" "Hygrometer" "Hydrameter"(?). Hydrometers are used to measure specific gravity. Hygrometer is for relative humidity. After reading all threads I resigned myself to using the HitandHope'ometer. I come here to get "unconfused"..lol

I bought a $6 hygrometer/thermometer (humidity & temperature) at WalMart. It's the same one selling on eBay for $14 or $15.
At that price, it's practically disposable. It works very well.

Where is the best place to buy the Brinsea Spot Check.
Is it best to buy it from the company it self? I think it is cheaper on the brinsea site.

I get mine @ walmart. They are small square boxes with a screen that tell temp (which isnt accurate cuz of th etemperature holding plastic) band the humidity (which works great.)

What did I do wrong?

I put 1/2 c salt 1/4 c water in a large plastic bag. And then put the thermometer/hydrometer in the bag. Its in a plastic unit with both things on one unit. It's been over 12 hours and it only reads 50%.

Well from what I understand now you have to add 25 to it because it is 75 percent humidity in that mix. Not sure why but every body else does it this way.

I'm thinking the plastic bag size had something to do with it. After 24 hours it was only a few %'s off. It took longer than 12 hours to get there. Moral of this story: use a smaller bag (preferred), and/or remove as much of the existing air in the bag before sealing everything in.
