I have the Hovabator Genesis with electronic thermostat and hygrometer. I am finding a variance of over 10% relative humidity when comparing the unit's humidity readout to another hygrometer that I calibrated using the salt bath method. My question is... Could the Hovabator really be THAT inaccurate, or does it have to do with where the readout is being taken. I have moved my calibrated hygrometer around inside the unit, and the % humidity changes. Maybe the Hovabator Genesis is designed to read humidity at exactly the right place?

Any advice, anyone?

I don't know the answer but I've been wondering about the hygrometer too. When my instructions arrived they had a yellow piece of paper attached that said "Humidity should be between 45-55% for SETTING and 55-65% for HATCHING."

This is strange because its much lower than most places I've read. I'm not sure if the way the humidity is an equivalent measure. Does anyone else know more about this?

wondering the same just put mine in lockdown just got it yesterday been using my old one up till know so I thought I would use the genesis 1588 for lockdown the built in humidity says 52% and the hygrometer I have in there I bought says 72% thats a big difference

I am having the exact same issue. Did you end up leaving it at the temp that read 72% inside? If so how was your hatch rate? I am adding my eggs in soon and want to know if I should leave it like this or calibrate the bator so that the inside hygrometer reads around 50% Thanks!

I am having the same issue with my 1588. I calibrated an extra hygrometer and have just been going off of that one and ignoring the built in one. My temp readings on the built in one are also way off, I called GCF and they said "just turn it up". So they were not much help as to why the readings were so far off. Good luck!

I haven't kept track of what the true reading is in my 2, but I had much better luck not adding any water until lockdown. Much better shipped egg hatch for me! I also found that both of my 1588 were running about 3-4 degrees under, so make sure to calibrate your temps!

I got a 1588 last year and finally got decent desktop hatches. I set my old hovabator to get the same readings with a stick thermometer as the genesis and like magic- good hatches. Keep the humidity around 30 -40 for the first 18 days instead of 55 though. A friend that uses one told me to lower the humidity to 30 by the digital readout so that is what I tried to stay close to. This year I got another and it works the same. Following factory instructions will give low hatch rates and sticky chicks that need help getting out.Lower humidity will help.

I've got the digital genesis running again with some more eggs. I'm keeping it at 35-45% humidity, knowing I need to add 10% to that number. When your window starts forming condensation at only 50-55%, you know humidity is actuall higher than that. I have rare eggs coming at the end of the month, so I really need to have the bugs worked out on this unit.
