I raise pure (heritage) birds for showing. I was working at the time but wasn't able to give it up until I retired. I was never able to make enough. By the time I built my coops and feeding the birds with selling the eggs and some birds, it barely paid for the feed. Currently I have around 400 birds. I hatch out my own chicks of which around half will be males. I grow them out and keep the best as my future breeders and sell the extra males. We have a farm swap a couple times a month with lots of buyers. I usually sell my birds pretty quick. I'm taking a bunch of males Saturday to sell. At least I won't have to feed them. Good luck with your plans and have fun. Poultry shows are a good place to meet breeders. Many breeders bring birds to sell at the shows. That is how I got my start with some of my lines.
