I’m new to the chicken world, and I must say, this is a learning curve I never thought I would be experiencing. It’s been fun and frustrating. My chickens currently reside in my living room because I’m a run before I can crawl type. I’m building their run and have materials for insulating the shed I’m converting into their coop. I’m about 85% done. I ran across BYC several times in search of chicken answers before joining. I think I will like it here!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
The vast majority of chicken coops do not require insulation. But what they do require is immense amounts of ventilation high above their heads. This ventilation needs to be open year-round. Where in the world are you located in general?

I’m located in the Midwest, Northern Illinois. The shed is resin and pretty open at the top, but I was thinking for that reason insulation would be a good idea. We can have brutal winters.

Your winters are pretty typical for what we would see in New york. My coop is not insulated and I don't heat it but it does have 23 sq ft of permanently open ventilation in it.

Thanks! This is good to know! My shed is about twice the square footage for 8 chickens. Do you think insulation is still unnecessary if the resin walls are an inch thick?
