Good morning,
My name is Brandy, currently I have no chickens but I’m on a mission to change that! I have 5 pet pigeons, 5 foster pigeons and a 15year old mixed breed dog! I’m a vanlifer in the San Francisco Bay Area and lease land for work (dog care professional) which is where my large pigeon aviary is located and where I’m hoping to build a small flock of hens to help keep the tick numbers low and have new feathered friends. I also am a volunteer wildlife rehabilitator! I’m an excellent and devoted caretaker to my pets but I’ll admit that young chickens I’m no expert at identifying and I found this forum because I met a really great potential new chicken at my local animal shelter last night but it’s just young enough that I’m not totally confident it’s a hen. So I’m hoping some expert eyes can help confirm it’s sex so I can make the next move. I have a short video and some pics from the front unfortunately I don’t have a full side photo but can try to go get one later today. I’m hoping to figure this out ASAP since chickens don’t usually adopt well from the shelter and they pass them along to rescues pretty fast. Thanks for your input! Sorry video won’t upload for some reason :/

Hello, Brandy, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
She is indeed a pullet. You need more than one!

Thank you! I looked at some over at Penninsula humane society as well, some older girls who are very established in their flock with a rooster. Unfortunately I can’t have a rooster on the land I lease. I know my local shelters end up with them frequently so I’m hoping to build my flock through adoption. For now the coop is attached to the 12x16 predator proof aviary I have for the pigeons with plenty of space to make its own addition.
