I bought two chicks yesterday. I’m very new to chicks so I have no clue what I’m looking for- I’m doing a test run to see if I can even keep them alive and see if this is something I’d like to do again next spring. Anyways, two chicks bought yesterday and I was told they’re RIR, after looking up this morning what RIR chicks look like, I’m skeptical. RIR chicks look brown/auburn/red and these chicks are pure yellow. Are these RIRs or did I get duped?

Where did you get them from? They could be a number of things, like male Red Sex Links or Leghorns. I’ve seen many posts of people buying chicks as certain breeds from feed stores and they turn out to be Cornish X.

Best to post back when they’re 6-8 weeks old for both breed and sex ID.

I’m afraid I don’t know much on Cornish X to give you advice just in case that’s what they are. Hopefully someone who does will reply soon!

have to agree with @featheredplanets on this one. If you bought them from a feed store, they're very likely to have been mismarked. Once they feather out we can better identify the breed for you.

I got them from someone off of Craigslist (risky right). He even showed me the hen which was definitely a Rhode Island Red but I noticed the rooster was white. Thank you guys!

After looking further at the pictures the man had posted on Craigslist. It looks like he has an Aracauna rooster with RIRs and one aracauna hen. He definitely didn’t have any Cornish cross (thankfully) I’m putting my money on some kind of possible RIR/Aracauna mix. Silly me.

If you actually saw his rooster, You may want to google :
"White easter egger rooster" along with "white auracana rooster" & "white ameraucana rooster"
I'll bet you that he had an easter egger rooster and hen. They get mislabeled often. Most people aren't trying to deceive, they just don't know any better.

I think it was Easter Egger or Americana rooster (they come in so many colors ) The people selling the chicks were very, very foreign and lacked most proper English so I can see why there may have been confusion. I guess time will tell!

The chick in the photo is definitely not a pure Rhode Island Red.
It certainly could have a white father and a red mother (although it could just as easily have two white parents.)
