I’ve been bit by the chick bug

I'm the wrong person to ask :gig

Started with three 20week pullets. That was supposed to be it. Part of an extra credit project for my 16 y/o son's animal biology class.

Bought four more chicks about a month ago. Now we need another coop so I'm thinking mine as well get that blue and red Wyandotte and mottled java I've been wanting...

Chicken math: it'll get us every time! :woot

I wish I’d had a biology class like that!

I'm definitely the wrong one. This is my second time around raising babies. First time I raised 6. That was 7 years ago. After losing my last 3 to a freak coyote attack a few months ago, I decided to do it again. I was thinking 8-10 this time - I'm on 10 acres and have no shortage of room. I picked out 10, oh, then had to add the last barred rock left at the feed store, to make 11. Then the next week I was thinking there were some more breeds I wanted to try, and thought - what a great time to do it now while they're all easy to integrate. I now have eleven 7 week olds, and six 6 week olds - ready to go into the coop that we're modifying to accommodate the extras!

Good luck and have fun!!!

Wow!

I considered getting a couple Jersey Giants, then I looked at my nest boxes and realized they probably wouldn’t fit!

My girls have learned to chicken in them. Mama Hen is doing fine for her adjustment period and i can use them again as we keep working on our barn coops. But if i had it to do over i might have bought a bigger coop all at once.

I’m a sucker for the “underdog” chicks. I also picked a barred rock because she (hopefully she’s a she) was the only one left and I didn’t want her to feel left out. I picked another because she was bleeding, and the others wouldn’t leave her alone. I almost got another that was being picked on, but that one was a bantem, and I’m not sure about mixing sizes.

They are so cute!

I was lucky and got my parents’ old coop. It needed some fixing up, but I’m not handy enough to buil my own. A barn coop sounds really cool, it sounds like it would have plenty of room!

Well. Its not a whole barn, but it's large. Two large coops are built into the side of the barn. Unfortunately they were enormously filthy with years of chicken waste in front of the coop doors. One is completely clean and has my five Wyandottes in it. Then on that side of the barn there are two goat houses also. We will probably repurpose those for later chicken additions. So the coops and goat homes are x feet from the outside wall to a walkway from which you can enter through doors in the back. The other thing my hubby had to do was replace a gazillion feet of chicken wire with hardware cloth. On the outside of the barn wall there are pop doors for each coop or goat room. It is pretty cool if only it was nicer.
