I’ll start by getting this out of the way... I’m one of those house chicken people. Okay? Awesome. Now...

My bird’s name is Enzo. She’s a 4 1/2 year old MGB (possibly a cross - not sure) who, despite hating other birds with a fiery passion, gets broody as hell, and tends to get sad when she figures out nothing is happening underneath her.

After a few years of this, we decided she’s taking this whole mommy thing seriously enough to try putting some fertile eggs under her. I was pretty sure she would stick with it, but you never know.

After a very short look on Craigslist, we found someone selling fertile eggs from her mixed flock. What caught my attention, was that the only two roosters in the flock were very special breeds. There were about 12 hens in the flock - two of those hens were of those same two breeds I was excited about, so we had a slim chance of getting a purebred. We didn’t care what they’d turn out to be, because all chickens are awesome, right? Right. So, we picked five random eggs out of the bowl, paid the nice lady $5, and put them under my favorite bird in the whole wide world.

**Edit** Only two of the five eggs were actually fertile.

Then this happened...

Here they are at 3 weeks old. What are the odds???

Oh my goodness!! What pretty birds. If they're cockerels will you keep them?

Thanks!

I’m trying not to think about that possibility, because I’m beyond attached to them.

Vader (Cemani - pretty sure that’s my rooster) hatched FOUR DAYS EARLY! Enzo (momma bird) watches over him and taught him that people are for cuddling. Three weeks in, they still go everywhere together.

Blue (Mosaic - I’m thinking pullet) hatched on time (4 days after Vader), and as it tends to happen, Enzo rejected Blue and tried to kill her as soon as she came out of the egg. I didn’t know this was a thing until it happened and we did some research. My wife has a very special bond with Blue because of this. She kept her warm and safe while I raced to Walmart at 11PM to get supplies for a makeshift brooder box. She is now a happy, healthy little nugget!

I can handle one being a rooster, but two might be overkill. Even then, I’d probably find a way to make it work somehow. Roosters are awesome.

However, absolute worst case scenario? I’ve got a very good friend who would love to add either one to his flock!
