Welcome Momma sorry about divorce, but ironic you ended up with chickens after all! I agree it is very calming to hang and watch them. The pond is awesome what a great job you did! I'm so glad you joined this is a great community.I was getting ready in 2019 to buy chickens for my farm after doing research on chicken keeping and talking to farmer friends. Unfortunately I ended up going through a divorce instead. In April of this year my children’s father decided to buy chickens and ducks for our teenagers and his girlfriend’s daughter. So now I’m taking care of them all for them.
We started off with 6 pullets and 3 ducklings but then with egg shortages and the brooders empty we got 9 straight run and 2 ducklings. Unfortunately 4 of the new chickens died but the other 5 are healthy and happy. Now we have 9 hens, 2 roosters, 3 duck hens, and 2 drakes.
The chickens are mix of breeds from Rhode Island Red to Sebright. The ducks are khaki Campbell and Mallard.
My favorite part about keeping chickens and ducks is watching them. I find it extremely relaxing to watch them go about their business and come running when I bring them treats. I recently built a pond for the ducks and it was worth the labor and expensive to see them enjoying it immensely.
Most of my hobbies are things to do outdoors but my favorite hobby is building houses or renovating them.
I found BYC in April when searching up different issues I ran into with the chickens and ducks and found so much helpful advice. I decided to join so I could get in on discussions and add anything that might be helpful to others.
