Hello, I am a new chick mommy too. I am in my third week of mommyhood. I used a cardboard box with an open top and filled it with wood shavings (not cedar - I guess it can make them sick. "white" or "pine" shavings work fine) and hung the light down in the middle of it. It worked really well for me. You may want to try that. I have also read that they can develop leg problems if they live on paper towels more than a couple of days, so you may want to try the shavings pretty soon.
Your chicks are darling! I hope you're done with your losses - I knwo that part is no fun. I lost two of my 17 in the first 48 hours and everyone has been good after that. If you would like to see pictures of my brooder and read some more details about how I have been keeping my chicks, I have a blog at: http://lisahaschickens.wordpress.com
if you go to the older posts on February 8th, 9th, 10th... you will see some brooder stuff and details about my chicks' first days. Good luck to you!
oh yeah... and keep in mind that they only need 90 degree DIRECTLY under the lamp. They should be able to get out from under it to cooler spots and they will put themselves in a comfortable temperature position. If they can't cool off below 90 degrees, they will be too hot sometimes.
I can so see how this can become addicting and habit forming
I have not came up with my finaly plan yet. I am trying to come up with a half bunny half chicken house. I want a run for each on the sides. I would also like to not have to go in the pen to get the eggs.
