Hi there everybody.
I am new here and have rescued a chick abandoned by a new mother hen.

This is my first experience being a
"mother hen"
This tiny runt chick was ledt to die in the dirt by its inexperienced mother who was dealing with her first hatchlings. She had approximately 7 including this one. There where 2 other chicks left in her nest that perished still in hatching mode. This runt I have named August and the other two that didnt make it where the only black ones. With the variety of chickens on the ranch I wonder if the eggs this hen hatched are from several different chickens?

Anyway I just wanted to introduce myself and my scenario. August is now a month old. Today is September 23 and I found her/him on August 23. I attempted to urge the hen to gather and take care of thus baby, but unstead she gathered all the others and hid them behind a log. When I found August she/he was approximately 6 feet or more from the nest which was uo on a hay stack. August was laying on its side flopped over in the dirt. The hen and her other chicks where within 2 feet of her nest. She was teaching her chick how to peck for food in the dirt.
I tried to entice August to get up and walk without toucing with my hands. I expected the hen to charge me and collect her baby.
Thats when she gathered the others and hid them. August wobbled to her/his feet and stumbled before crashing back to the ground dropping head back in the dirt.

I picked her/him up and offered it to the hen. She stared at me,did not run. I set the baby down and stepped sevwral steps back. She simply glanced at it and then continued to tend to the others. (She eventually only had 3 chicks left)
I waited a few mins and then collected the chick and that's how I became a new mother hen.

Fyi I understand its not good to keep a single chick. I did in fact catch one of the e remaining of her brood and brought it inside in an attempt to supply a companion for August. However although smaller than its sibling all August would do was bully and peck at it. Several attempts and I decided my efforts were in vain.
Shortly after I returned the chick to the hen.

Needless to say August had recovered well from being abandoned and left half dead in the dirt just in a matter of 3 days.

I knew nothing at all about raising chicks. I had to learn fast.

Thats our story dies anybody have and questions or advice for me?
Can anyone tell me fron the pics what breed and sex this chixk is most likely to be?
Thank you all and I am pleased tobe a part of this community. :)
(I am working on figuring out how to upload pics, just in case you have read thia and there are no pics yet)
