I first started raising chickens 2 years ago in October. I bought Satin chicken eggs from a sweet lady in Illinois and while babysitting my neighbor's cats and chickens, instead of eating the egg that was laid, I added it to the incubator just to see what would happen. By day 7 only 3 satin eggs were possible, and my added easter egger egg was possible. day 10 only 1 satin egg was doing well and my easter egger was doing well. I felt sad that only 2 chicks would not be enough for them to be happy, so I bought 9 chicks from the feed store. Silkies, frizzles and cochins.

Today I have 33 chickens and 23 were from my chicken's eggs and 10 from a hatchery.

The breeds I began with a Satin chicken which is a few breeds mixed together to create the Satin. Hey, they make beautiful colorful chickens. Silkies, the black and splash color, Frizzles, the white and red color and cochins, the red, black and white colors.
I have mix breeds now. Satin silkes, satin frizzles, frizzle silkies, frizzle cochins. It's all mixed and I love it. They are so soft and pretty and sweet.
My easter egger.
I added this year 10 Columbian Wyandotte. They were supposed to be all hens but one is a rooster.

My favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens is that they for some reason I don't even know make me feel amazing when I am around them. I feel like I have a place to go and any of my stresses don't get to join me in the run. There is so much to learn about their language. They are serious, funny and lovable. The roosters are all romeos dancing around, giving up treats to the hens or me. I do have some that are in love with me. There are things they do I think is mean and just wrong to each other. I do my best to help those things to not be a part of their lives.

Some of my other hobbies are art related. I love most anything creative. Painting, drawing, clay, resin, and the list just keeps going on.

My husband and I live with my dad to help take care of him. He has health issues. We have 2 Samoyeds Hana and Juno. We have a cat name Oliver, and my daughter has his brother which is with Oliver a lot and his name Nimbus. We have a long hair Chihuahua. I clean houses and own an industrial embroidery machine with 4 years' experience working at a logo shop running 4 machines. I would like one day to get enough embroidery orders so I can just do that.

How did I find BYC is by looking up stuff to help me with my chickens. I guess I have known about BYC since I got chickens. I guess it was just the right time to join. I am so busy really that I think just sitting here and having some time caused it to happen.

It sounds like you have a nice flock! I love my mixed breeds, too. If you have any picture of your birds or pets, we would love to see them, if you don't mind sharing!

Best wishes to your flock and your embroidery business! That is a neat skill to have.

Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!
