make me scared that I am going to wake up to some kind of chicken disaster. Now I realize I have to be prepared for some problems. But do I need to be in a constant panic? Now I only have 5 chickens and their only about 4 months old, so far, so good. My DH built a very secure coop and all is well. Now I read about coons, snakes, mites, rats, fox,and dogs getting to them.(and now I am attracting these things!) From what I read, here, it happens all the time, or am I over reacting? I am not prepared in anyway, shape, or form to put any animal down. Please tell me this is not the norm so I can settle down. I do indeed luv my chicks, but this my first time with any type of farm animal. I am basically a city girl. TY:hu

I think you need to calm down

I have had my chickens for over a year and one death due to a tumor. We are predator heavy here and have them protected properly. No issues.

Preparation is good, panic is bad.

If you take all of the appropriate measures, you can greatly reduce the risk of bad things happening.

And what you read on here are the bad things that happen. Everyone that has chickens that are doing fine doesn't make a post that says: "Nothing bad happened today."

It is kind of like on the News, they don't make an announcement everyday there isn't a plane crash, but when there is one, they will definitely announce it.

As stated calm down...
Its just the natural order of things. Just be proactive about predation to your flock, be on the offensive.
Check your local laws and regs on relocation or disposal to your local animal shelter.

Yes, I do get obsessed w/reading the bad stuff, can't help myself. This site has helped me alot on knowing what to expect. Thanks for your help.

Stop reading all the doom and gloom posts about predators and being totally wiped out or dragged through a fence, whatever,, chill out and enjoy your birds! You might lose some, you might not.

That's it! Your banned from predators and pests....

Chickens can be scary, the things they can get ill by and so on, but wouldn't you rather know, than not know?

Right. There are almost 37,000 members on this forum. You are reading the horror stories. Most of us never deal with most of what you are reading. A meteor could fall on your house in the next minute, too.

Relax and enjoy.

I agree. It also wouldn't hurt to not click on every thread in the emergencies section either. If you do, you'll soon have hypocondriac chickens.
