I thought I knew what I was getting when I purchased my "hens" from a reputable hatchery. I now know I have what is not a black sexlink hen is a black austrolop roo. They also told me this next question I have is a red sexlink hen. What do my knowledgable chicken lovers think?

That looks like a speckled sussex! They are actually on the endangered chicken list. I am jealous they are awesome looking! I am not an expert though, and that does look like a hen, but I am just using the speckled sussex roo up the road. Hopefully someone will pip in with more info.

well seeing the back one, she looks like a hen and the front could be a roo if you are comparing the comb and wattles...

Can you take some more detailed pictures so that we might be able to help you with gender? It is sooo frustrating when you find out that you dont have what you were supposed to have. Have you contacted the hatchery to tell them that they gave you the wrong birds? Out of my 7 girls I may have 3 roos... feel your pain, but us on here like to see updates of feathering and legs and what not so keep us updated

Thanks JakRat, yeah....they are quick little buggers..lol! Best of luck with your Speckled Sussex chickens, they are beautiful!
