I am getting milk goats!

Yeah, the one I tried was from Raley's, but it claimed to be from free range goats. I am so glad that we won't have to rely on large scale dairies for milk anymore! Huge improvement! Although I still have a while until then.

Now my little sister is getting a goat from 4-H, and the leader said she could sell me a kid and help me raise and show it too! The only problem is, there hasn't been any FFA dairy goats at our fair for 3 years, so we have to call the office tomorrow to see if I can show. I am REALLY hoping that I can!

It's official! We are getting baby goats very soon!

I can show them for FFA, and we talked to the 4-H dairy goat leader for a long time last night. She has a lot of goats, a lot of breeds, and knows a lot about them. They are just starting to kid, but they will mostly be born in March. Also, she has tons of friends who are very serious about goats and have every breed under the sun. She said one of her friends was getting older and having a hard time caring for her goats, so we might go see what she has for sale. Also, she is really good friends with my neighbor who has goats.

The thing is, she is selling her babies for $200 each, which my dad would rather not spend. I know she has really great lines, but it seems like we could find a better deal. She wants us to come see her goats and some of her friends' goats. Also, I found an add on CL about bottle baby nigerians for $100 unregistered. I am not sure how much it costs to get them registered, or if that is even possible. I really don't know if they are show quality or not, if they are disease tested, or anything really. Good luck on finding the right goats.
My daughter is doing the Dairy goat project with 4-H. I'm not sure how it is in your area but please check with your county extension. Our county requires the goats to be registered and have certain shots in order to show them. We just reserved our babies today, we have an Alpine triplet doe that were getting and an alpine buck, both will be 8 weeks old when we get them. Our doe is costing us $200 and that is covering the registration as well. For our area that a great deal these registered doed with good lines can cost anwhere from $250 to $450. The buck is cheap, he's maybe $50.

Actual registration doesn't cost much. BUT if they do not give you the proper parentage paperwork you cannot register them on your own. Some breeders use it to 'cull' out those they feel are not quality, since an unregistered goat is less valuable. They will probably not sell the goat with the papers to get registered, for that price.

We called her, but she wasn't sure if the woman coming to look at them was going to buy them all or not. We decided it would be better to wait anyways. We are going to the county-wide 4-H meeting on Sunday, and I think she has better prices, and definitely wants to help us out. Also, we are going to go see some goats sometime in the next two weeks. She has great lines, but she is charging $300-$500 each! We are just going to learn more about goats though, and see all the breeds. However, my neighbor actually also has saanens, I just found out, so maybe we could ask her about it. There are a lot of possibilities, we are still learning right now.

Also, our local fair does not require them to be registered, but the larger fairs in the surrounding counties do. So we don't NEED them to be registered, but it would be nice if we wanted to show them more. Thanks for all the advice!
