Hello all,

I am new to this forum and to raising chickens. I got four Chicks in April from the TSC and a Fifth shortly thereafter. My backyard chickens seem to be spoiled, my kids spend alot of time with them and they love being with people. I cannot go outside without being rushed by chickens! I think I am enabling their behavior by always having something for them to eat. I put in my first garden this year and the chicks have been helping weed and fertilize it. Aren't chickens great?

Oh well, any advise for keeping my chickens healthy and happy would be great.

My setup is an 8X12 shed with a quarter of it partitioned off with framing and chicken wire fencing, I only have two nesting boxes with shed access so I don't have to go through the screen door into the coupe and get poo on my shoes. I have roosting poles they use and a fan to circulate the air in the summer and a heat lamp for the winter. Every morning the chickens are let out of the coupe and shed to roam free in the privacy fenced backyard. In the evening they all migrate back into the coup area and roost on the poles. I shut them up in the coupe for safety and security.

I live in a little suburban town where farm animals are probably looked down upon, but these chicks are PETS, my daughter named them all and we will never eat them. Their eggs however are coming on strong! I am averaging three a day, one day I got five. The little bit younger fifth chicken is not yet producing, I believe.

I do have concerns about disease and am wondering what kind of vet visits I should be making. I fed them chicken starter which was medicated, until they started laying eggs. Now they are on layered crumbles. Any do' s and Don't s will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the most addicting chicken website ever.

I couldn't imagine eating any of my babies either, they're all my pets. Although my parents can't tell how I name them because they can't tell the difference.

People seriously need to learn that chickens aren't the gross farmbirds that some people advertise them as!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Any advise out there, I am just kinda winging it right now and it seems too easy. Come on, what to I have to be mindful of?

Thanks in advance!

Since you asked DON'T get an incubator! If you do it's all over-you will keep buying eggs, and soon another bator, and building more coops, and bigger runs...........

So you think these egg laying wonders are addictive? I wouldn't know enough to be able to sell chicks, my friends would want females and I have no clue how to sex them.

chocolate m'scovy :

But what are "vet visits"?

I was serious, Is there any medical precautions I need to take to keep them healthy, and if I think they are sick, what do I do? Most animals like cats and dogs get booster shots, de-wormers, etc. what are there for chickens?

Welcome to the world of chicken's.Your bird's should be just fine.Since you have such a small number and sound's like you have a fair set-up for them they will do great.Good luck if you go the VET route. Most don't have a clue and wont even look at one. It's basic old school when it come's to chicken's.Yes they can get thing's like COCCI, etc.You can treat them yourself with Corid should they get that.Basicaly you should worm your bird's and watch for sign's of lice or mite's which you can treat yourself.I have been doing bird's for 6 year's and never had any major problem's except lice in 2 pen's once and got them treated myself. If you over stress about all the wrong thing's that can happen it will damper your enjoyment a lot having birds. My grandson is 2 and he lives with us and is around the birds daily and I dont go insane about the poo he get's on his shoe or if he touche's the chicken's.He would probabaly pick up more germ's from shopping cart at local Walmart! Lot's of info here from some great people.Alway's someone usualy will have a tip or help for you.
