I am new to raising backyard chickens for eggs...I have questions right off the bat.

I am new to raising chickens for eggs. I live in Arizona and right off the bat, I think I got the wrong chicks. I have a few that are about 6 months old and are heat tolerant, but the ones I just got are Crevecoeur chicks and they are not going to tolerate the heat. What should I do besides get an air conditioner for their coop? Or is there something better I can do?
Welcome to BYC!!

Hi, and welcome to BYC. When the weather turns really hot, folks here came up with the Texas Chicken Air Conditioner, which is a couple bottles or jugs of water stuck in your freezer and set out in the coop or pen in the shade where chickens can sit nearby and enjoy the coolth. I used it up here in Massachusetts and can say my chickens really enjoyed it on the hot days.

You'll want an open front coop in Arizona. Here is an article on coop ventilation that also includes some links to coop designs with plans, organized by climate.

For Southern Arizona, yes, definitely a good idea! In my neck of the woods (literally), it wouldn't be as ideal.😅
