Hi from Mississippi! I am starting with 8 red pullets from Tractor Supply. They are 5 days old now. My husband and I will be building a coop next weekend. I plan on using our kids playhouse, a wooden
400

chest for the nesting box and I am looking for some pallets. I bought some hexagon netting and we plan on building a trench to sink it in the ground around the coop/run.
I am so excited and sponging up any and all information/advice.
thanks for having me!

They do grow fast! Our 8 chicks out grew their original brooder box (a plastic storage bin) in just a couple weeks. We built a largger brooder out of wood and wire with a top as the chicks began to fly at about 6 weeks. Our Chickens just turned 1 year this months. They have been a great addition to our lives. This web site has been a huge help! Hope you have as much success as we did. They are 3 weeks old in this picture.

the hexagon netting sounds like chicken wire. If it is, it won't keep out the predators like raccoon, fox, dogs etc. if you have these around your place. plus it will rust if you put it under ground. If you do have these problems, 16 gage or better is best for the coop and run. with 1/2 in wire around the bottom to detour the raccoons and any rodents. The chicken wire is good for keeping hawks out if used above the run. oh, and welcome to byc.
