I am so Glad they invented this!!! Heat Lamps!!!

because here in ct. the temp read 7 degrees in my car, i get to work and its now 4 degrees!! BRRRR

I checked the girls this morning as i usually do before i go off to work, and they were happy and warm, their water was a bit frozen (odd) but i stomped the ice out, if they are thristy they dont have to do much with their beak to get to the water. their poop was froze to the ground.

but they were all on the roost under the lamp... nice and toasty warm , aS i felt their bodies!!

My 4 week olds are all out under a lamp, but it's only 46 degrees out there right now. A few more weeks and they won't need the lamp anymore!

13 below this am..My guys hae a heater in their coop but with these temps it will only get to about 20-25 and their wateres need to be smacked out and refilld!..The breeder pens are a pain because I have to unscrew them all to get the frozen water out! Im always thinking "NExt-year-Im doing this or that" everyday I learn something new that only just improves their well being and my sanity...

Whew, we're at -21C chill factor. Some thoughts below- this is our 'normal' January, but we're just come through a blizzard and it was a howler.

its been so cold even the heated waterers i bought are freezing up.. come on spring..

I was checking our Silkies' pen yesterday and found their waterer, set on a heated base, frozen. No way! But, it was, solid. I picked it up, inspecting, found nothing about the waterer that was a problem. Picked up the supposed-to-be-heated base, and a big family of little grey mice scattered in all directions. Hadn't they found snug digs? Heated enclosure, lots of bedding, seeds at hand...and wires to chew on. I replaced all that with my cats' heated water dish for the moment. I'll have to think this one through...how to protect these bases from becoming Mice McMansions. ~G

Pick up the base twice a day and shake out nesting or mice - they'll get the picture!
