So. She sits on 17 eggs. For 24 days.

Im happy. Im going to get little fluffy butts all over the place.

I go out two days ago - expecting 17 eggs.

THERE WERE ONLY EIGHT!!!

SO now Im sad, mad, dissappointed.

I go out this morning. There is ONE COLD egg in the nest.

Im so mad right now I could get rid of her.
But I salvaged some of her eggs earlier and my buff hatched them for me. they are beautimus

So im keeping her and letting my buff hatch ehr eggs. And Im getting a bator. But Im never letting her go broody again.

*sigh* I am just so... INFURIATED with her right now.
I was expecting babies and had people who wanted them. I wanted to keep some. Well now I only have enough ducklings for one person who ordered.

Sorry to hear about the problems. I guess that's where the old saying about counting your chickens before they hatch thing comes from. I guess the good thing with ducks and chickens is that you don't have to wait too long to give it another try. Good luck on the next batch.

Thanks . I shouldnt have put too much stock in a first time broody. My buff did an ok job though - giving my 7 live babies, 2 dead, and 2 bad eggs.

I sympathize with you.

I have 2 muscovy hens that haven't hatched but 4 chicks out of 2 nests (14-18 eggs each to begin with) this year, I think last year too.. If I check last years records (it was their first year) and find that it was these two that had a tough time last year they are toast ( or should I say soup!) One when she leaves the nest chases the young hen who hatched 13 and is running the yard with them.. She grabs the babies-- mean- jealous- wants her own but hasn't got it right yet.

We will see with this batch if she stays or if she goes..
I am going to candle the eggs over the weekend on the other hens nest.

every time I check her she is standing over them but not setting on them, now I know in this weather sometimes it gets too hot but the younger hen hatched hers under a peice of tin- in June- with some days over 100..!! I raised the younger hen with chickens- she thought she was a chicken for a long time would not and still doesn't hang with the other ducks!!

Giver her another chance. Is something(another animal) bothering her? There may have been circumstances beyond her controll.. It is so sad when we are looking forwad to babies that should hatch but don't!!

Im going to be on the look out for snakes from now on. I mean to have 17 eggs missing in a week?! as well as my cayugas eggs. I cant find them anywhere!!

Possum would seem more likely than snakes It woulld take a bunch of snakes to eat that many eggs in that short of time. A possum will leave the duck alive as long as he can get eggs.
