Well there is 80% of your temperature controlling issue you can get away with a mechanical thermostat for a hot water tank at Home Depot for about seven dollars and that is probably your best bet but you have to be familiar with electrical work

Would a hot water tank heater work? I have a light in it now, I do have a thermostat for an aquarium yet, but assumed that's what they'd be for, water

No it's the hot water tank thermostat it's what attaches to the outside of the tank you just have to wire the lightbulb into it there is tons of tutorials on YouTube that can show you how to do it but your temperature problem is because you don't have a thermostat

Look on eBay for an STC-1000. They're cheap and precise.
Then search, metallic heat element. They're more reliable than light bulbs.

I'll have to order something online. Went to homedepot, petsmart, phoned petcetera, bosleys, Canadian tire, Rona. No luck
