I just brought home 16 new baby Silkies (Yayayay!!!) and got the brooder set up. I think they’re cold, though. What temp range does the brooder need to be?

Yay, so exciting!

It's recommended for the brooder to be around 90 degrees the first eek, and then you can begin lowering it by about 5 degrees each week until they're fully feathered and can go out to the coop. A strong, urgent peep usually means too cold, and panting means too hot. Chicks will also tell you if they're too hot/cold by where they place themselves in the brooder. Bunched up under the light? Too cold. Standing far away? Too hot. Mixed around and enjoying life? Perfect :)
