One of my Andalusian hens has been in and out of the house with a swollen eye lately. I figured out it was the new shavings I used in the coop. I put her back in the run and bought more shavings. I was supposed to change them out yesterday, but everything went sideways and I FORGOT! I can't believe I was so irresponsible. I came out this morning to find the nesting box splattered with blood and my poor hen has scratched her eye and the side of her face very badly. She's back in the house now and I'm changing the shavings. I'm just so P.O.ed at myself for dropping the ball.

What kind of shavings were you using that bothered her ? It would be good for us to know so we don't use it !

You know we are all under alot of pressure this time of year with Christmas and all that goes with it. It's so hard to keep up with everything !

Don't be so hard on yourself as we all do these things now and then as we are distracted by all the things going on in our lives !

Thanks guys. She's getting ample cuddling, treats and apologies galore. Every time I look at that eye, I cringe. She looks like a domestic violence victim. I don't think I could feel worse if I'd beaten up on her myself.
I'm sure it's the shavings. She's clearly done all the damage herself. I used a new brand the last time I cleaned up. That's when the swelling and scratching started. Her right eye has taken the brunt of it. I suspect because she's right footed, making it easier to scratch. I don't have the bag the shavings came in, but they were supposed to be pine. I think some feed stores use the term "pine shavings" like Southerners use the word "coke". Shavings is shavings right? Uh...wrong! There's no telling what was in there. I never should've stopped using Statesman. The feed store I always buy shavings at doesn't carry anything else I use and their hay sucks, so I thought I'd shop elsewhere. Poor decision.
