Hi, I was wondering what your worming routine is and what wormers you use.
Where do you get your wormers from?
I am not a fan of the type you use in water.
I have only ever used Safe Guard For goats I think in Pellet form.
Is Safe Guard ok to use?
How Important is it to Worm These birds?
I have only wormed my Chickens/Guineas once, Mine all seem healthy.

There are two side to that one is Drugs the other is diatamais earth food grade it would be harder to find the Meds that would treat the one animal or bird that you are Intending to treat for the Infection of worms and I do not know of one medication man made that will work to prevent the Infection that may or may not be harmful in some way to you or the Animal and there's the dosage of the medication for each its determined mostly by body weight.
These drugs can be found in places such as Feed stores and Farm Supply stores as well Vets could supply you with them also.
I don't want to sound like a snake oil salesman but food gradediatamais earth is a preventive as well as a cure for the worms in all animals and birds.
I eat my fowl and do not want to give any drugs to my flock unless I absolutely have to and only as a last resort.
Different parts of the world will vary as far as infestations of parasite worms in the soil.
The time of the year can vary in what amount are active in the soil wormer months more active than cold.
They can be transmitted from one infected animal to another.
D.E. or food grade diatamais earth can be mixed in water as well as the food.
I use one cup to a 5 gallon bucket of feed one time a month in the colder months and more as needed in the wormer months I also use it on my dogs.
You can dust your dogs and your birds rub them down with it and it will keep parasites off the birds and fleas off the Dogs.
I dust the yard as well for any and all Insects and it works great this is my 3rd year using it.

If you have an emergency cases were you were lax in treating your animals and they get a bad case of worms boil down some tobacco cooled down first and give a teaspoon 2 times a day for 2 to 3 days Nicotine is the best Insecticide and will not hurt any animal.

I picked up Safe guard wormer in Pellet and in Paste,
I also got Wazine and ivermectin Pour on.

Can you guys suggest a routine using these, WHich SHould I use first, what should I do next, Such as use the same one a few days later or switch to a different one, Can any be used together?

Dose rates any tips?
Pour do I just drop a few drops on the birds back? Under feathers? Thanks

I used ivermectin Pour on on them, I will repeat in 10 to 14 days I guess, THis is what I have found on the net, does this sound right to you guys?

I picked up a bottle today of Safeguard goat wormer in liquid form, It says to give orally, Can I put this right in there water and if so what is the amount for Peafowl,Turkeys and Chickens? Thanks

JOe, I'm not great at the wormer stuff, but I guess know more than most as I have had livestock for years and know how to worm them.

Do not mix wormers.

Create a plan that addresses the problems worms you are likely to have. THe current thinking is rather complicated but I willtry to convey the intent. I attended a worming seminar --3 hours by a horse vet.

In horses, the cost of a fecal atest is well worth the cost. THe purpose is two fold. Determine the kind of parasite ( worm) that is a problem, then verify the effectiveness of the dewormer used. THe current purpose of deworming is not to rid the animal of every parasite but rather keep the level at a non- impairing level. In horses, the accptable levels can vary horse to horse. SOme horses naturaly have higher levels than another horse. In horses, individual screening and dosing is typical. Regular deworming every 2 months is not the preferred model any more. Rather specific dewormer given a specific horse for a specific worm.

In chickens, flock management is the method rather than individual animal management. I have been trying to figure out how to apply the horse model to the chickens. Constant worming is not good-- the worms not killed become the worms that are not effected by the dewormer. Creating resistant worms.

THere are other management tools that can be used as well. NOt over crowding the space available. Rotating the areas the birds are in. Dry conditions and very cold freezing conditions also kill some types of worms ( or their eggs).

My biggest issue is finding information suitable for the backyard enthusiast; I usually rely on univeristy sites for information but that is too often geared toward the commercial producers. I so find some info for the back yarder, so I keep looking and hope to get lucky.

Sorry this is more theory than specific instructions. Keep looking. I use safeguard liquid for sheep and use it on chickens I sell to a new home. I use the google search to find most of the dosages. ANd you will find some people know a bit more than others. Try to determine if the source is reliable.

What happens if you mix wormers? I know some suggest you use one then ten days later you use another, Is that what you mean by mix or do you mean give two at same time?

Sorry I wasn't clear.

Do not give two wormers at the same time.

ANd you do give back to back treatments of the same-- at least this is the old method. Knock down the population hard that is killed of by treatment A; then move to another class of chemicals and use treatment B the next time. THe theory is to decrease the possibility of creating resistant worms.

As you learn the chemical names you will need to catagorize them by groups of similar chemistry. Know the chemical name , not just the brand name.
