I tried that. In the 2:1 he focused all his attention on the larger hen and all but ignored the smaller. In the 5:1 he picked a new favorite only because I took the original favorite out. When the new favorite was starting to look ragged and the old favorite was healing nicely I swapped them out. You'd have thought he'd been stuck in a monastery!

When I got more roos I culled him because my largest hens were spending more time in isolation cages than breeding cages.

Back on topic! The number of hens to roos you can have in a cage tends to be largely dependent on the temperament of the birds themselves. Right now I have two 3:1 cages and one 2:1 cage with not a feather out of place.​

I agree its dependant entirely on the individuals. some folks have 1to1 and do fine some as high as 1 to 8 and do fine. Sounds like time for you to experiment
